About this event
Hollow forms turned through a small opening were always a challenge for me to turn. In this workshop I'll
show how I make hollow forms, using green wood, much like you make lidded boxes only I'll glue the lid
back on. Not only is there less risk of turning through the side of your vessel but it is also easier to gauge
the wall thickness as well as remove the shavings from the inside. I will focus on techniques for making
a precise joint to help ensure that the piece stays together as it dries. Time will be spent demonstrating
various ways to then hide the seam in your vessel. This vessel will also have handles.
Hollow form class, students should bring:
Spindle roughing gouge
1/2” bowl gouge
3/8” spindle gouge
Parting tool
Straight hollowing tool ½” shaft or larger
6” steel rule
Medium super glue
Exterior calipers
Dividers
For each class each student will need a blank 4" x 4" x 7-8". The grain should run the length of the blank like a spindle blank. They should be free of defects such as knots, cracks, rot, bark inclusions or the pith. The wood should be a hard wood like maple or birch or similar and should be as fresh as possible. Feel free to call with questions about the tools or wood.
