About this event
A shrink box is a container that is made from green wood with a bottom that is a dry disk of wood that is fit into a groove in the base of the box. The green wood box shrinks as it dries, locking the bottom in place. Traditionally these were hand carved. I’ll
demonstrate how to turn the box, cut the groove and carve and shape the bottom to achieve a good tight fit. Typically turned wood boxes are made from dry wood, I like this technique as it is a way to make lidded containers but still use green wood.
Shrink box class, students should bring:
Spindle roughing gouge
1/2” bowl gouge or 1/2" spindle gouge
3/8” spindle gouge
Parting tool
Round nose scraper
Square end scraper
Straight hollowing tool ½” shaft or larger
6” steel rule
Exterior calipers
Dividers
A basic carving knife
For each class each student will need a blank 4" x 4" x 7-8". The grain should run the length of the blank like a spindle blank. They should be free of defects such as knots, cracks, rot, bark inclusions or the pith. The wood should be a hard wood like maple or birch or similar and should be as fresh as possible. Feel free to call with questions about the tools or wood.
