Learning to sharpen your turning tools is possibly the most
foundational skill in developing turning technique. The most
time consuming part of sharpening is figuring out which
profiles work best for you & practicing so you are proficient. Unlike other skills in woodturning, ALL of woodturning relies on the tool’s ability to remove wood…a sharp edge
makes the tool easier to control &more fun to use!

Please make sure to be ready to bring your own grinder to the workshop BEFORE signing up.

Sharpening workshop tools:

1. Basic Turning Tools (Skew, Parting Tool, Scraper, SRG, Spindle Gouge, Bowl Gouge)
2. Grinder with CBN wheels (strongly preferred), equipped with sturdy platform and V-arm + Vari-Grind jig or equivalent
3. Diamond Credit Card Hone (DMT Dia-Sharp- extra-fine OR Trend Carver's Hone- 600/1000grit)
4. Leather Strop + Emery Buffing Compound (if possible)
5. Thick OR Chisel Tip Sharpie Pen (Black, Blue, or Red)
6. Dust Mask + Eye Protection
*Any other tools or equipment that is part of your personal sharpening/turning protocol.
*PLEASE know that you DO NOT NEED to have ALL of the tools to participate in the class... I will also my personal tools with me if anyone needs to borrow (although I do not have enough to loan out for everyone).
* The club also has basic turning tools included in our turning kits if needed. It will contain some gouges and a basic 4 jaw chucks but you may prefer to bring your own tools
