What is this?
Using basic spindle turning tools (skew, gouge, parting tool) this session showcases
Eric’s favorite techniques to create five styles of playful and artistic finger spinning tops. Attendees will learn simple sharpening techniques and
tool application to create ultra-clean cuts and textures. While focused on creating playful pieces, this session is packed with information and
techniques applicable to all spindle turning projects!
Spinning Tops workshop tools:
1. 3/8" diameter Bowl Gouge (fingernail grind)
2. Spear Point Scraper (negative rake preferred)
3. Radius Profile Scraper (negative rake preferred)
4. Skew OR Fingernail Spindle Gouge
5. 3/8" Beading/Parting Tool OR 1/4" Parting Tool
6. Ruler + Calipers (dial calipers OR traditional "outside" calipers)
7. 4-Jaw Chuck
8. Drill Chuck + 1/4" bit & 3/4" forstner bit
9. Task Lighting
10. Access to Sharpening Equipment (grinder, extra-fine diamond hone, strop, etc.)
*Any other tools or equipment that is part of your personal sharpening/turning protocol.
*PLEASE know that you DO NOT NEED to have ALL of the tools to participate in the class... Eric will also bring his personal tools with him if anyone needs to borrow (although I do not have enough to loan out for everyone).
* The club also has basic turning tools included in our turning kits if needed. It will contain some gouges and a basic 4 jaw chucks but you may prefer to bring your own tools
